trip, only to be wrecked at the dock. good morning, everybody. we begin with the impending budget faceoff that has the country teetering on the edge of a fiscal cliff. >> president obama will speak from the white house today about his game plan to grow the economy as well as cut the deficit. and republicans say they are ready to make it happen. abc's tahman bradley is in washington this morning. good morning, tahman. >> reporter: good morning, paula and rob. shortly after he was re-electioned, president obama called congressional leaders to discuss the so-called fiscal cliff. it's a major problem. it has to be solved by the end of the year. republicans and democrats have signaled they're ready to talk. but there's a major hurdle. a showdown's looming in washington, even as democrats and republicans strike a conciliatory tone post-election,

both sides are set to collide over taxes. >> raising tax rates is unacceptable. and, frankly, it couldn't even pass the house. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview with abc news, house speaker john boehner drew a hard line on raising taxes. but opened the door of raising more revenue as part of a deficit reduction deal. >> i would do that if the president were serious about solving our spending problem and trying to secure our entitlement programs. >> reporter: but democrats think the newly-re-elected president has a mandate to raise taxes on families making more than $250,000 a year. >> there was a message sent to us by the american people, based on the campaign. and that is, people making all this money have to contribute a little bit more. >> reporter: democrats and republicans are set to begin talks on debt reduction, hoping to avoid automatic spending cuts and tax increases from kicking in at the end of the year. the president will make his first post-election comments on

the economy today at the white house. during his victory speech tuesday night, he says he wants a bipartisan solution to solve the country's fiscal challenges. >> i'm looking forward to reaching out and working with leaders of both parties, to meet the challenges we can only solve together. reducing our deficit, reforming our tax code. >> reporter: the president will make his remarks this afternoon at the white house in front of an audience. but he will not be taking any questions. and the white house says he will not be announcing any new policies. rob and paula? >> tahman bradley, live in washington for us this morning. thank you, tahman. and we're getting a rare glimpse this morning of an emotional president obama. his campaign released this video, which was taken the morning after his re-election victory. it shows the president tearing up and wiping his eyes, as he thanks campaign workers at his chicago headquarters. >> you guys, what you have done, blue, red, and the work that i'm doing. and i'm really proud of that.

i'm really proud of all of you. and what you have done -- [ applause ] >> this is believed to be the first time the president has been seen crying publicly since taking office. >> rarely see that from any president, that's for sure. we're also getting a clearer snapshot this morning of the mood and reaction inside the romney camp, as the results rolled in election night. mitt romney was said to be shell shocked as reality set in. and he was systolic in his conversation with the president. sources tell cbs news that he hastily pieced together his concession speech, knowing he had to say something. despite polls showing the president had an easier electoral path, the romney campaign was very confident, believing intensity and enthusiasm were on their side. and three days after the election, they are still counting the ballots in florida. president obama has claimed

victory in the sunshine state. but officials have not declared a winner. florida is still undecided, largely due to long voting lines on election night, a deluge of last-minute absentee ballots and other assorted problems, so to speak. and our other major story is the drastic steps being taken for gas shortages in new york. new york's mayor says only one-quarter of the city's gas stations are actually open. and the shortage could last for a few more weeks. these drivers think rationing is a good idea. >> i think it will cut down the length of the lines. >> i think that makes sense. i think that should have started from the beginning. you know, it would have eased up. and you wouldn't have had this -- these long lines. and people trying to, you know, fight for gas. i think jersey, actually, did the right thing by doing that. >> as you just heard, a similar rationing plan is drastically

reduced lines in neighboring new jersey. there's growing frustration and anger on long island, since many residents still don't have power nearly two weeks after the storm. some are told it will be thanksgiving before the juice comes back. a report says the power company ignored warnings as far back as 2006, that it wasn't able to handle a major storm. one official is calling on the military to take over the job of restoring power. a judge affirmed jared loughner would spend the remainder of his life in prison for the deadly shooting rampage. it was the first time victims who survived the crime, including former congresswoman gabby giffords came face-to-face with loughner. her husband, mark kelly, spoke on her behalf. he said it marked a new beginning. >> the goal is to move on. and make the most of every day and not to focus on the past.

this is now in our past, which is a nice thing. it does feel some sense of resolution. i can guarantee you, we will not be spending a lot of time thinking about jared loughner. >> throughout the hearing, loughner sat without emotion and said only two words to the judge. yes, sir. it's time, now, to take a look at the forecast from across the nation. friday. >> a beautiful thing. >> a big storm in the rockies, with blizzard conditions and up to two feet of snow in montana, idaho, wyoming and utah. light rain in the dakotas. drier in the northeast. and a chilly morning in the southeast. >> 70s from miami to new orleans. mostly 50s in the northeast and midwest. some 40s from seattle to portland. and when we come back, talking turkey. what this year's thanksgiving feast is going to cost. not just in terms of your waistline. >> exactly. also, the deals you can snag when that dinner's over. more black friday previews are now rolling in. and then, train wreck.

welcome back, everyone. wall street is facing growing fears that the economy could careen over that so-called fiscal cliff, which is the double-whammy of spending cuts and tax hikes that kicks in january 1st whout a deal in congre. the dow sank another 121 points yesterday, with a two-day loss of 400 points. the nasdaq tumbled 41, almost 1.5%. mcdonald's is serving up

some disappointing numbers. the fast food giant says worldwide monthly sales are down for the first time in nearly ten years, dropping 1.8% in october. the weak economy and competition from chains, such as burger king and chipotle, are key reasons for the decline. and speaking of food, this year's thanksgiving feast, just 13 days away, we should add, is going to cost about the same as last year. the price of a classic holiday meal, turkey and trimmings for ten, is pegged at $48.48. that's up just 28 cents from last year. and more stores are trying to get you up from the table and into the mall. sears and walmart are opening up at 8:00 thanksgiving night to get a jump on black friday. and best buy, the biggest electronics chain is offering its earliest black friday sneak peek ever.
